Two separate European Commission studies have shown that European spending on research and development is falling further behind target, leading to a widening of the gap between the European Union and competitors, such as the United States and Japan.

The EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard was released by the Commission's Research Directorate on 9 December 2005. The second set of figures was released on 6 December 2005 by the Commission's statistical arm, Eurostat, in a press release on 6 December 2005.
