In December 2000, up-to-date information from independent consultants retained by the Commission confirmed the Commission's concerns over delays and significant cost overruns in the implementation of the Berlaymont renovation project. As a result, the Commission brought the relevant issues to the notice of the Belgian authorities in order to ensure that they were also fully informed and able to undertake appropriate examination. In addition, because of concerns about a payment claim for the renovation of the Berlaymont, Vice President Kinnock conveyed the results of the consultant's review to OLAF. He also instigated arrangements for thorough technical and procedural analysis of Commission engagement in the project. |
