The recent debate on bioscience issues such as the cloning of human embryos, genetically modified organisms, the sequencing of the human genome and the question of granting patents for scientific results has prompted Philippe Busquin, European Commissioner for Research, to ask prominent outstanding European scientists to advise the European Commission on how to communicate the implications of these new technologies to the public. The first meeting of the High Level Group met in Brussels on 26-27.4.00. In the coming months it will prepare the ground for a Biosciences Summit scheduled November 2000. |
