Press Release: Fischler lanuches discussion on the future of the Common Fisheries Policy

At a seminar on sustainable fisheries on 28.6.00, Franz Fischler, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, announced the publication of a Green Paper with options for the future of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). He said that a new orientation was necessary for the CFP to tackle some long-standing problems, like the continuing depletion of commercial fish stocks and the serious economic difficulties this causes the fishermen and the industry. The Commissioner invited the participants from the European Parliament and the Advisory Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture to contribute actively to this important debate, given the Commission proposes to table a Green Paper with options for the future of the CFP in early 2001.
