Abstract: This volume charts the relationship between Britain and the countries of Western Europe in the years since 1945, with emphasis on the period since Britain became a member of the European Community in 1973. It examines the attitudes of politicians and members of the public towards the European Union. The chapters focus on Britain's reaction to the moves towards European integration, the EU institutions, the impact of the EU on government and politics, political parties and Europe, pressure groups and popular opinion, EU policies and their impact on Britain and the past and the future for Britain and Europe. The book is written in a clear and simple style making it easy to digest. A number of useful tables showing current membership, accession dates and populations are included. Each chapter begins with an introduction and asks the reader to think about a number of questions which are raised by the text that follows.
