They changed from names to flags at last week's EU-Western Balkan summit in Zagreb, not to achieve greater clarity but in the interests of diplomacy.

The aim was not to mention the word Macedonia, which is still causing trouble between the Greek region of that name and the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

FYROM is lobbying the Union hard to remove the FYRO and just leave the M, and Greece is equally determined to retain exclusive rights to the word.

So, to avoid any embarrassing divisions at the Zagreb gathering, the organisers decided that instead of sitting behind the traditional country-of-origin nameplates, the place settings would be decorated with a little national flag.
