Date: 07/12/00 Turkey's relationship with the European Parliamenthas never been easy, as MEPs have insisted on linking Ankara's progress towards EU membership to the treatment of the country's Kurdish population. But the situation reached new depths last week when Foreign Minister Ismail Cem was barracked in the Parliament by two members of Turkey's far-left DHKP-C party. The two militants called Cem a murderer and brandished pictures of Kurdish prisoners. Once tempers had calmed, embarrassed Parliament officials launched an inquiry into how and why the demonstrators had been let in. Rumours that a Green or left-wing MEP was responsible were quickly scotched after it was pointed out that one of the pro-Kurdish protestors was in possession of a press card as a journalist for the DHKP-C party newspaper. |
