Commission President Romano Prodi has welcomed the result of last weekend’s referendum in Switzerland on closer links with the Union

Speaking after a large majority of Swiss voters approved a raft of seven agreements covering agriculture, free movement of labour, transport and other issues, Prodi said the outcome "clearly demonstrates the will of the Swiss people to further develop and foster relations with the EU". But he acknowledged that the vote did not mean Switzerland was moving closer to joining the Union.
