France could use EU funds intended for rural development projects to repair damage caused by the recent devastating storms, the Commission said this week

A spokesman said Paris could spend some of the average €760 million it will receive annually over the next seven years to help rural areas. The money would, however, have to be matched by equal funds from national coffers and the Commission would examine any plans to ensure that they complied with Union rules.
