Free r.cade academic research accounts available

A special flat-rate deal was offered to UK academic researchers and European Documentation Centres last year but from April 1999 an even better deal is on offer. Through an arrangement with Eurostat a number of on-line accounts are being made available free of charge to individuals, research projects, and library or resource centres in higher education. These are strictly limited to academic research so a separate commercial account would be required for any consultancy work undertaken. Under the terms of the agreement the accounts will permit 21 on-line hours per annum using the menu interface or 210 web sessions. For academic institutions whose access to EU statistical data in print-based format has been severely curtailed in recent years, this is a welcome move on the part of Eurostat. The simple interface is easy to use and the data can be output in a variety of formats including export into spreadsheets. Full user documentation is downloadable in Word or HTML. Demonstration seminars are taking place throughout the UK offering the opportunity to see what is available and how it works with a hands-on trial.
