The Gilly and ICI cases have helped to illuminate the relationships between Community law and international law. It has shattered the illusions of many taxpayers (treaty preference) and Member States (grounds for justification). The European Court of Justice's decisions have made it clear that Community law will not interfere with international law - at least not for the time being.
