European Yearbook, Vol.XLV

Book abstract:

The aim of the 'European Yearbook' is to promote the scientific study of a number of European organisations and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Each entry contains a description of the organisation, list of members and an outline of its activities and structure. There is also a review of the year and discussion of the issues addressed by the organisations. The organisations covered are: European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Benelux, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine, the Council of Europe, the European Civil Aviation Conference, the European Conference of Ministers of Transport, the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, the International Commission on Civil Status, the Nordic Council, the European Space Agency, the European Organisation for Astronomical Research, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, OECD, the European Patent Office, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the European Union and the Western European Union.

Also included are four articles on: The contemporary revolution in communications; The summit held in Strasbourg; 50 years of the multilateral trading system; and Not as propaganda, but to tell the truth: the Council of Europe's work on history teaching, 1949-97. There is a comprehensive bibliography of books and articles published during 1997 covering a wide variety of subjects such as European integration, economic integration, the Council of Europe, human rights and security and defence, together with a cumulative list of the articles published in volumes I-XLV. The book is written in both English and French.

This valuable publication which outlines the work of a wide range of organisations will be of use as both a reference volume and to provide background material for further research in a number of key policy areas.
