Dealing with Europe: Britain and the negotiation of the Maastricht Treaty:

Aiming to offer an integrated account of the British government's negotiating strategy across a range of policy areas, this text examines the negotiations that led to agreement in December 1991 at the Maastricht European Council, which in turn mapped the future progress of the European Community (EC), later renamed the European Union (EU). The book emanated from the arduous process which had taken place under the aegis of the 1990-91 intergovernmental conferences on Economic and Monetary Union and European Political Union. It focuses on three specific case studies: EMU, Common Foreign and Security Policy, and social policy. The book is divided into nine chapters each dealing with issues of particular importance during the period, highlighting where Britain stood in relation to other Member States and focusing on the extent to which the British government attempted to influence the negotiations.
