The Swedish Commissioner-designate gave an impressive performance, coasting through her three-hour hearing.

She succeeded in answering MEPs' questions with a quick-witted confidence that masked her relative inexperience in the environmental dossier she has been handed by Romano Prodi.

Well-briefed and pushing all the right buttons to seduce a traditionally combative environment committee, Wallström made a passionate defence of the EU's green record and promised further action to prevent any further degradation of Europe's environment.

She said there were five key areas where she expected progress during her term of office: protecting citizens' health; safeguarding Europe's water; cleaning up the Union's chemical stable; combating climate change; and extending the EU's environmental laws into central and eastern Europe.
