The enlargement of the European Union: The first title in the series looks at the process of enlargement of the EU and is written by two European Commission officials. The emphasis is very much on the latest enlargement mechanisms, rather than detailing the history of enlargement of the EU. An initial chapter describes the process of enlargement, the legal provisions in the Treaty, the conduct of negotiations, and the function and importance of the 'acquis'. Subsequent chapters describe the current enlargement process in relation to the ten countries of Central and Eastern Europe that have applied to join the EU. One chapter looks at the preparations of the Opinions, another on the contents of the Opinions. There are further chapters on the Mediterranean dimension, concerning the position of Turkey, Malta and Cyprus as regards wishing to join the EU, and the implications of Agenda 2000. A further chapter looks at NATO enlargement. The book is a concise and clearly written account of one of the key current policy priorities of the EU today. Avery, Graham/Cameron, Fraser |
