Book abstract:

European Union development policy:
The current state of the relations between North and South can be broadly defined by reference to a number of keywords: liberalisation (of markets), globalisation (of the world economy), fragmentation (of the old Cold War blocs), and the marginalisation of the poorest countries. In the context of the relations of the fifteen-member European Union and the developing world, the contemporary impasse of development theory and practice can be seen as undermining the best efforts of the EU and its developing partners to create a new relationship in the twenty-first century.

This book is an authoritative and wide-ranging analysis of current issues and dilemmas in the European Union's relations with the developing world, based upon a conference called 'Europe and the developing countries' held in London in late 1996. It brought together politicians, academics and policy-makers to address both recent experience and the way ahead after the EU's leading development policy, the Lomé Convention, expires in February 2000. Development policy in the various Member States and at EU level and the prospects for furthering the international community's human rights and good governance agenda are examined in detail.
