Summary: The Cohesion Fund committed in 1997 a full 100% of its budgetary allocations for ongoing projects and new projects in the sectors of trans-European transport infrastructure and environment in the beneficiary Member States, Greece, Spain, Ireland and Portugal. Although the Cohesion Fund has always been very close to its targets for committments each year, this year for the first time since its creation, the Fund reached 100% commitments. While in earlier years transport projects had received more weight in funding allocations than environment projects, the Fund this year contributed 54.4% of its means to the environment, while putting 45.5% forward for transport. The overall situation for the 1993 - 1997 period could thus be successfully redressed in favour of the environment. The Fund aims for an equitable allocation of financial assistance between the transport and the environment sector for each of the beneficiary Member States for the total of the planning period from 1993 to 1999. |
