The employers' federation UNICE was understandably determined to get its message across when the Commission unveiled plans for greater worker consultation in firms with more than 50 workers.

An irate press release was dispatched but due to a faulty fax machine, some journalists received 378 copies. Many were eager to ignore the old maxim “don't shoot the messenger”, and UNICE secretary-general Dirk Hudig had to intervene to sort it out. But at least the press got the message - the bosses really are very cross.
