said this week that he wanted the problems faced by Germans expelled from their homes in eastern Europe to be tackled as part of the enlargement process. Kohl told a meeting of the German Expellees' Association in Bonn that the entry of the Czech Republic and Poland into the EU would “ease the solving of still open bilateral questions”. Around 15 million Germans were expelled from former Czechoslovakia and Poland after the Second World War. The expellees' group is calling for compensation for those driven from their homes.
