A recent European Parliament hearing on energy policy had some quite surreal moments.

Perhaps the most bizarre spectacle of the entire proceedings was the sight of assembled MEPs trying to work out exactly what one of the bodies invited to participate, the European Commission's new energy consultative committee, actually does.

The question never seemed to be entirely resolved. However, the Parliament's members were adamant on one point: whatever the precise role of the elusive committee, MEPs should receive copies of all its reports.
