Politics has a habit of turning life upside down, as Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock would readily agree.

Kinnock ended up in his Brussels post after leading the British Labour Party to defeat in the 1992 general election. And who was shadow transport minister under Kinnock's Labour leadership? John Prescott, now lording it as deputy prime minister with responsibility for transport policy.

It is no secret that Kinnock and Prescott did not always see eye to eye. In fact, rumour has it that while Kinnock was Labour Party leader, he once attempted to exile Prescott with the offer of a tasty new job - as a Commissioner in Brussels.
