Date: 11/09/1997 THE European Commission has called for a special hearing on privacy laws, following public outrage over the Princess of Wales' death in a car crash as she was being pursued by photographers on motorbikes. The Commission itself plans to take part, together with the European Parliament and representatives of the media. In a letter to MEPs late last week, Culture and Media Commissioner Marcelino Oreja wrote: “I believe that urgent action is necessary, and that this should involve, in the first instance, representatives of the press itself.” His proposal follows calls by the Parliament's culture and media committee for an emergency debate on the issue at next week's parliamentary plenary session in Strasbourg and a Commission study into press legislation across the EU. |
