Havana cigars have been a sensitive issue amongst EU diplomats ever since the Helms-Burton row erupted. Should they puff and be damned to demonstrate their opposition to America's trade shenanigans or do the decent thing and indulge in non-Cuban tobacco leaf?

The second option is favoured by German Christian Democrat MEP Elmar Brok, a man keen to foster transatlantic relations. At a recent meeting of the Transatlantic Business Dialogue attended by US ambassador to the EU Vernon Weaver, Brok could be seen drawing contentedly on a big cigar over coffee.

“Don't worry. It is a Dominican Republic cigar,” he explained, smoothly avoiding any possible friction.
