Date: 08/05/1997 An unexpected candidate is in the running for a one-way ticket to Dublin and command of the European Commission's new veterinary agency in Grange, just outside the Irish capital. That, apparently, is what you get for turning down the post of delegation head in Ankara. Sipke Brouwer, former chef de cabinet to Foreign Affairs Commissioner Hans van den Broek, is renowned for his combative style and is widely seen as the main cause of the much-publicised friction between British Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan and Van den Broek in the Delors Commission. He now handles relations with central and eastern Europe in DG1A, but seems to have fallen out with his superiors - hence the pressure on him to take the Ankara job. But Brouwer has made it clear that he is not interested. Can he be tempted instead by a nice veterinary number just across the Irish Sea? |
