Poor old Karel van Miert. The Belgian RTBF television cameras have been trailing him everywhere in the run-up to a crucial subsidy decision affecting the future of Clabecq, the Walloon steelmaker.

The limelight seems to have confused the Competition Commissioner so much the other day that he got out of the Breydel lift at the wrong floor and only realised halfway down the corridor that he was not heading for his office.

Van Miert retraced his steps as the camera rolled, delivering a perfect cinematic metaphor for the decision now confronting him: does the Commissioner know in which direction he is going? Does he know which way to turn? Despite appearances, the answer seems to be yes: there is no reprieve in sight for the doomed steel plant.
