The Commission plans to issue guidelines by mid-March on the labelling of genetically-modified food

This will fill the gap pending a revision of the directive which lays down rules for the marketing of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), which is now expected in June. France has decided to allow the release on to its market of the modified maize developed by Ciba-Geigy, which was at the centre of controversy late last year. Legislation was published in France at the beginning of this week requiring the compulsory labelling of GMOs in human food and animal feedstuffs.
