Date: 13/02/1997 Sometimes you might think that nothing else is happening in the world except economic and monetary union. But the Americans have a different perspective on life, as Commission President Jacques Santer discovered at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He was going out live on CNN and had just opened his mouth to explain how EMU flexibility would apply to Spain and Italy when he was abruptly cut off: an Israeli helicopter crash had wiped Santer and EMU off the news map.
