Date: 12/09/1996 Research Commissioner Edith Cresson is giving a whole new meaning to the word “temporary”. To be eligible to sit a concours to become a permanent secretary at one of the Union's various research centres (Ispra, Petten, etc), candidates must have at least 25 years' experience as a temporary Commission employee. Applicants for 'A' (administrative) and 'D' (huissier, chauffeur) posts need only 18 years' experience as a temporary. “This is all part of Cresson's new broom,” say Commission sources, adding wryly: “Some new broom to take people with at least 25 years' experience and make them permanent.” Cresson is determined to restructure the Commission's research services and is introducing three broad categories. One group will have permanent contracts, a second will have ten-year contracts and a third will have a maximum of three-year contracts. |
