Date: 04/07/1996 One in three of the EU's citizens claims to be able to speak English well enough to be understood, so does this mean that two out of three EU citizens are taxi-drivers? A Eurostat poll shows 15&percent; of the EU population can be understood in French and 9&percent; in German. But across the continent, the most widely-understood language is Russian at 35&percent;, with English coming in at 28&percent;, German at 20&percent; and French at 17&percent;. The most multilingual nations are Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg. The least useful languages? Portuguese, Greek and Finnish - except, presumably, in Portugal, Greece and Finland. |
