Date: 10/10/1996 Support for the journalists' team among an audience so often on the receiving end of critical dispatches was not exactly fervent in the early rounds. But most spectators cheered them on in the final after The Wolves made it through to the last two in controversial fashion, winning their semi-final against Competition Commissioner Karel van Miert's team with a goal scored, say soccer experts, after play had been temporarily halted. There was, however, consolation for the 'Karel's Cartel Busters' in the form of plaudits from one and all for sporting the wittiest team shirts of the day, bearing the logo “not at all sponsored by VW Sachsen, Crédit Lyonnais, Bremer Vulkan, Banco di Napoli, Maribel etc. etc.” - a tongue-in-cheek reference to some of the most controversial competition cases which have landed on the directorate-general's mat in recent months. |
