Just a month after producing its 'Auto-Oil Programme' to cut car emissions, the Commission can hardly be praised for leading by example.

As the Commissioners left their Breydel headquarters for a meeting with the Irish presidency last week, a convoy of cars made its way to Brussels airport. “I didn't see a single Commissioner sharing a car with another,” commented one critic.

Perhaps President Jacques Santer has adopted a royal policy of always travelling separately so that in the event of an accident, there is always someone left to carry on the line.
