Heads of government reached a classic compromise at the Florence summit on the design of the Euro.

The problem was whether heads and tails on the single currency coins should be the same way up, as is the case with national coins in some member states, or at opposite ends on their respective sides, as is the case in others.

Are you following this? Obviously, our leaders were a bit confused because they decided after a lengthy debate and much prevarication that the best decision would be to decide to leave the final choice to member states themselves.

A victory for subsidiarity, if not for common sense.
