Date: 05/12/1996 What was Santa doing in Brussels this week? This is a not-uncommon question, but we are referring to the real thing for once - the chap with the white beard and red cloak - who dropped in to deliver some early yule-tide cheer to the Commission crèche and the European School in Woluwe. But why did the revered old gentleman visit Budget Commissioner Erkki Liikanen as well? No disrespect to Father Christmas, but it will take more than a sack of chocolate ecus to balance the 1997 Euro books, won't it Erkki? It would have been more appropriate, surely, for Santer to meet Santa while he was here, providing the perfect photo opportunity in the run-up to a season in which one of them will be dispensing joy and excitement to European citizens everywhere.
