Date: 25/07/1996 Simon-Pierre Nothomb, secretary-general of the Economic and Social Committee (ESC) for the past three and a half years, is taking early retirement. The deal was agreed days after the former director-general of the Catholic University of Louvain turned 63. The Article 50 golden handshake - the second given to an ESC secretary-general within four years - means that ESC Director-General Adriano Graziosi takes over as acting secretary-general. But ESC watchers believe a longer-term game plan is being played. France, one of the staunchest defenders of the Committee's role, is expected to push one of its nationals for Graziosi's post so that whoever is chosen can be groomed for the top slot in a few years' time. |
