Date: 17/04/1997 Martin Bangemann has become the first Commissioner to conduct Union business in a sauna. The Commission's industry supremo accepted an invitation from Matti Kohva, the city of Helsinki's EU representative, to discuss the Baltic Maritime Database from the comfort of the specially-equipped Finnish EU delegation office in Brussels - and why not? The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and you can guarantee that no one is going to throw in the towel before negotiations are concluded. The Finns do this sort of thing all the time, but sooner or later someone is bound to raise the issue of discrimination - the saunas are strictly 'men only'.
