Date: 26/09/1996 A major exercise is under way to make Commissioners more consumer-friendly. Deep in the bowels of the Breydel, certain lofty figures, including Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan, have been put through their paces at special 'soundbite-and-smiles' clinics - but poor old internal market guru Mario Monti's image makeover has been postponed, thanks to the Belgian weather. Monti had fixed up an outdoor photo shoot after seeing the results of a similar session in which dashing debonair Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy was given the glamour treatment. De Silguy was pictured in suave, casual poses, walking in the park with his jacket jauntily flung over his shoulder, at the wheel of his car, and so on. No Italian likes being out-smoothed by a Frenchman, but Monti has left it a little late. The brief bright spell has gone and as Belgium's grey clouds and rain are not considered the right backdrop for the Commissioner's personal picture portfolio, the photo session has been postponed indefinitely. |
