Lurking in the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) is William Archer, son of the former Conservative Party chairman and renowned UK novelist Jeffrey (Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, etc.).

The Hon. William, son of Lord Archer, is a stagiaire on ECHO's Iraq desk, a placing which has nothing to do with his dad's keen money-raising venture in support of Kurds oppressed by the Iraqi regime.

No signs yet of a book about a titanic power struggle between two impossibly handsome, powerful presidents and a cunning plan by more than 300 million people to get their money back, but Archer junior is settling in nicely and, Entre Nous hears, has turned his work station in rue de Geneve into a home from home, complete with tablecloth, personal lamp and incense.

He is said by colleagues to be Kane and Abel. Entre Nous thinks they mean keen and able.
