Unless clear rules are established, computer buffs logging on to the European Parliament's Internet site could find themselves moving swiftly from the complexities of a uniform electoral system to the racist policies of the Union's more right-wing parties.

At the moment, the Parliament's web site offers access to information provided by the various political groups.

Now French National Front member Jean-Marie Le Chevallier, a non-attached MEP, has opened a fundamental debate by suggesting the site should offer those logging on access not just to position stances of individual MEPs, but also to their national parties.

The request, which has received an initial rebuff, is opening up a whole debate about editorial standards and freedom of expression. As yet, the dilemma is not one the Parliament's most senior members and officials have shown any inclination to tackle.
