Date: 12/09/1996 Rumours abound of a dastardly plot to unseat DGV1 (agriculture) Director-General Guy Legras, whose future is uncertain following the leak of a letter in his name apparently urging that the BSE problem be kept under wraps to avoid upsetting the meat markets. Legras has been DG since 1985 and has been exerting a little too much influence for some people's liking, it is said. The future of Fernando Mansito Caballero, Legras' number two, is also in doubt. He has been suggested as a potential fall-guy for the leak saga. But help could be at hand: as it happens, Caballero is a close political ally of Spanish Socialist MEP Manuel Medina Ortega - the man chosen as rapporteur for the European Parliament's committee of inquiry into suggestions of a BSE cover-up. It's a small world. |
