Prepare for some musical chairs in the last few weeks of the Intergovernmental Conference.

France's representative, European Affairs Minister Michel Barnier, is likely to be too busy electioneering to participate fully in the four two-day meetings slotted in for May. His place might be taken on a temporary basis by French permanent representative Pierre de Boissieu.

There could be a more significant change in the UK negotiating team if the Labour Party wins tomorrow's (1 May) general election. A change of government will herald the arrival of a new face at the table: Labour's European Affairs spokeswoman and former MEP Joyce Quin, who would take over the role of presenting the UK's case from ambassador Sir Stephen Wall.
