MEPs have given their backing to several EU-funded measures

to safeguard the health of the Union's citizens. In Strasbourg yesterday (17 April), they supported a five-year EU-wide health monitoring system to bring national indicators up to the same standard. But MEPs said that, to be effective, funding for the project should be raised from 13.8 million ecu to 20 million ecu. They also endorsed plans to put in place EU rules to ensure blood safety after a series of scandals involving contaminated supplies.
