Date: 14/12/1995 External Relations Commissioner Manuel Marín's spokesman Josep Coll I Carbo is finding the Brussel's winter chill a bit nippy on his bare chin. Josep used to sport a rather jaunty goatee number, but he bet his beard that Catalan President Jordi Pujol would win an absolute majority in recent regional elections. Pujol came in ten votes too short and Josep, an honourable chap from Barcelona, duly turned up for work next morning clean-shaven. Maybe it's just as well, because beards have been frowned on by certain senior administrators in the Commission service: one DGX official who decided it was time for a facial cover-up was gently advised that moustaches and beards were not really the thing for A-grades with an eye to the future. He is now clean-shaven again. We think it would be polite if somebody tipped off Mr Marín. |
