Date: 26/10/1995 PARENTS, pupils and teachers are to have a greater say in debates over the quality of pre-university education in Europe, following a decision by EU education ministers this week. Spain's Fernando Gomez Riesco said he hoped the move would raise the standard of school education on offer in member states. EU cooperation with the US in the field of higher education and vocational training is to be stepped up, education ministers have decided. The move is part of a larger EU campaign to forge education links with third countries. A similar agreement with Canada is expected to be approved by the Council in coming weeks and plans for heightened cooperation with the Mediterranean region are also in the pipeline. EDUCATION ministers were told that Central and Eastern European countries' efforts to join the EU's higher education programmes might be hampered by a lack of cash. To participate fully in the Socrates, Leonardo and Youth for Europe III programmes, the associated countries would have to contribute roughly as much as member states do - a price they say they cannot afford to pay. |
