Date: 04/04/1996 Turin was notable, not just for the presence of BSE, but for one particular case of foot-in-mouth disease. The victim was Commission President Jacques Santer, who took over answering questions when Lamberto Dini's voice gave out towards the end of a lengthy post-summit press conference. “Let me step into the breach, as the prime minister will need his voice - at least until the next elections,” declared Santer. His remarks were taken by some to suggest that Santer did not rate Dini's chances in the Italian election on 21 April very highly. Surely not? |
