It was inevitable that sooner or later the EU would run into a conflict of interest over acronyms. It's only surprising that, until now, there has not been a problem keeping them all separate.

The first such difficulty has arisen over ECHO, which Consumer Affairs Commissioner Emma Bonino will happily tell you stands for the European Community Humanitarian Office which she has been doing so much to promote around the world.

But all you Internet surfers will have bumped into another EU institution when targeting ECHO. This is because the Economic and Social Committee, better known as EcoSoc, has launched a new database containing the full text of the Committee's opinions and bulletins - and the key word to find EcoSoc turns out to be ECHO.

If Emma or ECHO's director Santiago Gómez-Reino want to complain they can find the impostor on http://www.echo.lu/ceshome.html.
