Date: 07/03/1996 Meetings of EU foreign ministers are more fun under the presidential leadership of Italy's Susanna Agnelli. Every gathering seems to produce some little barbed comment or cross word from someone or other. The latest incident involved Germany's Klaus Kinkel and his mobile phone. Agnelli was clearly annoyed because Kinkel was constantly on the phone during one agenda item, getting fresh instructions from Bonn. “I did not think that you took instructions from anybody, Herr Kinkel,” Agnelli remarked icily at one stage. No response is recorded from the German, who was otherwise engaged - on the phone. |
