Date: 26/10/1995 Greek crooner and Euro MP Nana Mouskouri has turned in a lyrical amendment to her own European Parliament report on the Ariane programme, proposed by the Commission to encourage translation between lesser-used languages. Fortunately the singer, who was 61 last week, has not tried to provide any musical accompaniment for the following: “Whereas in Greek mythology, Ariadne gave Theseus the thread with which he found his way out of the labyrinth and the Ariane programme for translation might therefore be the thread with which people could acquire a better knowledge of the history and culture of each of the member states and especially of the countries with less widely- known languages.” The programme is currently being blocked by the UK for budgetary, and possibly now literary, reasons. |
