MEPs have voted in favour of broadening the scope of new rules governing cross-border payments

to cover bank transfers worth up to 50,000 ecu. The vote yesterday (13 March) will set the Parliament on a collision course with finance ministers, who agreed last year that the rules would apply only to payments of less than 25,000 ecu for the first two years and less than 30,000 ecu thereafter. MEPs and ministers will now have to hold conciliation talks to try to find a compromise.
