Vienna has formally defied Commission requests for anonymous savings accounts to be outlawed in Austria

“We believe Brussels' arguments against the accounts do not hold water,” said Austrian Chancellor Franz Vranitsky this week. Vienna denies that the practice of unnamed accounts violates the EU's 1991 directive aimed at eradicating money laundering. Austria is the only EU country which allows anonymous accounts.
