Date: 05/10/1995 Democracy is a wonderful thing, but what price a mushroom-shaped nuclear fall-out cloud representing the people in the European Parliament? That was the shocking news in a Socialist press release in Strasbourg, which said: “A mushroom-shaped nuclear fall-out cloud is to be elected outside the European Parliament tomorrow in protest at French nuclear tests in the South Pacific.” Panic broke out as soon as the mistake was spotted and all copies were recalled to be destroyed by hand, according to an Entre Nous source. “We don't want this getting into a diary column somewhere,' growled a unsuspecting senior Socialist Group official. Nevertheless, the error was corrected and the mushroom cloud was duly erected as planned, instead of elected, outside the Parliament building. |
